I wonder what Nigerian Universities (especially the public universities) are turning to. The university administration or system has now become something else that it will take timely intervention only by God and stakeholders for the system not to collapse. Gone are those days when you are paid even while in the university, your feeding and accommodation isn adequately provided for, even after your study - a readymade job is waiting for you and a lot more.
Reverse is the case nowadays, instead of being paid while in the university, the university administration is extorting students to the level that students now have to take their ground to decry this inhumane act and this is the cause of regular protest by students.
This is the case in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) as the university management sent their students home due to the protest they made concerning the unreasonable hike in the acceptance fees and the making compulsory of the payment of TISHIP( Tertiary Institution Health Insurance Programme).
The students on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd February, 2011, had a lecture boycott thereby disrupting important school prammes such as the matriculation programme for fresher's, Induction of nursing and medical rehabilitation student, and the opening of the national museum.
The reason for their actions is based on
the increment of the acceptance fee from #2000 to #20,000
the making compulsory of the payment of TISHIP( Tertiary Institution Health Insurance Programme) :The TISHIP ( Tertiary Institution Health Insurance Programme) was made optional before but now made compulsory for all students. The price being #2,000 for new students and #1,600 for returning students.
Incessant increase of the laboratory manual dues ranging from one department to the other.
The SUG president, Fredrick Joel, said all this payment are supposed to be free. He said and I quote " At least we've paid for laboratory dues in the school fees, why then money for manuals".
All effort of the Student union to meet with the school management was futile as the school authority and the governing council said there was no going back.
This made the SUG executives to encourage and mandate all students to go on a week lecture boycott. All entrances to the school were closed by the students and all other activities were suspended on the campus.
The management sought for the help of the mobile police and 3 students was arrested. This made the student to abduct 6 security guards of the school security, interrogating and using them as bait for the speedy release of their colleagues. The school management rise to the bait and the 3 students was released. The student also fulfilled their promise by releasing the security personnel involved.
